Your first meeting
- Pick an open meeting if you're nervous or bringing someone. Anyone can attend.
- Look for "Newcomer" or "Beginners" in the meeting type.
- Arrive 10 minutes early. Someone will usually say hello. You don't have to speak.
- Bring nothing but yourself. Meetings are free. A basket may go around; contributing is optional.
- Try several. Each meeting has its own feel. Most people try a few before picking a "home group."

Not into 12-step?
SMART Recovery uses a four-point program (building motivation, coping with urges, managing thoughts and feelings, and living a balanced life) and meets in person and online across Orange County. Some people use SMART alone. Many combine it with AA or NA.
Meetings and sober living
Meetings fill the hours between work, treatment, and home. Many sober living homes, including District homes, expect residents to attend meetings. Ask admissions how many meetings your house expects and whether there is a house meeting.
The District has men's and women's homes in all four Orange County areas (West, Central, North, and East), each within a short drive of dozens of meetings a week. Admissions answers 24/7.
