Outpatient rehab in Orange County: standard OP care
Standard outpatient rehab provides fewer than 9 hours of addiction treatment a week while you live at home or in sober living. It often follows IOP, but some people start there after assessment. Because most of the week happens outside treatment, medical stability and a safe, recovery-supportive living environment matter.
- Hospital inpatient 24-hour medical care
- Residential / detox Live-in treatment
- PHP / high-intensity OP 20+ hrs / week
- IOP 9–19 hrs / week
- Outpatient Under 9 hrs / week
- Long-term monitoring Recovery checkups
Sober living is housing, not a level of clinical care — but ASAM can recommend a recovery residence alongside outpatient treatment.
What happens in standard outpatient care
An outpatient plan may include:
- Individual counseling
- One or more therapy or recovery-skills groups
- Medication appointments or coordination with a prescriber
- Drug and alcohol testing
- Family sessions
- Mental health care or referrals
- Regular reviews of goals, risk, and whether the level should change
Ask for the actual schedule. The word "outpatient" is broad and can refer to anything from a weekly appointment to an intensive multi-day program.
Who standard OP may fit
Standard outpatient may fit when someone:
- Is through withdrawal and medically stable
- Does not need daily clinical structure or 24-hour supervision
- Can stay safe and avoid substance use between appointments
- Has transportation and a stable place to live
- Is stepping down after PHP or IOP
- Needs ongoing treatment while working, studying, or caring for family
It may be too little support when withdrawal is active, substance use continues frequently, mental health symptoms are unstable, or the home environment makes recovery difficult. Ask for reassessment rather than trying to force the schedule to work.
Outpatient versus IOP and PHP
| Level | Hours per week | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| PHP / high-intensity outpatient | 20+ | Most weekdays in structured care |
| IOP | 9–19 | Several treatment blocks each week |
| Standard outpatient | Under 9 | Step-down or ongoing care |
Hours alone do not determine clinical fit. ASAM assessment also considers withdrawal, physical and mental health, substance-use risk, environment, and personal preferences.

DHCS lists 120 certified outpatient substance use programs in Orange County. Its dataset groups standard OP and IOP together, so the count does not show how many offer a specific schedule or specialty.
Verify the exact location and certification on the DHCS list, ask whether the service is standard outpatient or IOP, and confirm who provides therapy and medication care. See how to check a California rehab license.

Questions to ask an outpatient program
- How many clinical hours will I receive, and on which days?
- Why is standard outpatient appropriate instead of IOP or PHP?
- Which services are individual, group, in person, or telehealth?
- How are medications and co-occurring mental health conditions handled?
- What happens after a missed appointment, return to use, or worsening symptoms?
- How often is the treatment plan reviewed?
- What is the full cost after insurance?
Red flags include pressure before assessment, vague answers about the licensed provider, a one-size-fits-all plan, or free housing or gifts tied to enrollment. See patient brokering and rehab scams.
Living in sober living during outpatient care
Standard outpatient occupies a small part of a 168-hour week. Sober living can add a drug- and alcohol-free house, rules, peer accountability, and a stable base for work or school during the many hours between sessions.
The District is sober living, not an outpatient treatment provider. We have separate men's and women's homes in four Orange County areas. Couples can live in separate District houses and see each other at OP and aftercare programs. With written permission, staff can coordinate with a resident's program and offer rides to treatment. Residents choose their treatment, and we do not pay or accept anything of value for referrals.

Common questions
What is standard outpatient rehab?
Standard outpatient, or OP, is addiction treatment delivered while you live elsewhere, generally for fewer than 9 hours a week. It may include individual therapy, groups, medication appointments, testing, and recovery planning.
What is the difference between outpatient rehab and IOP?
Adult IOP generally provides 9 to 19 hours a week. Standard outpatient provides under 9 hours, often one or two appointments or groups a week.
Who is outpatient treatment for?
It can fit someone who is medically stable, does not need 24-hour supervision, can stay safe between appointments, and has a stable recovery environment. A clinical assessment should decide.
Can I work while in outpatient rehab?
Usually, yes. Standard OP is designed to fit around daily life, but confirm the program's schedule and attendance rules before enrolling.
How long does outpatient rehab last?
There is no fixed duration. It may continue for months as a step down from IOP or as ongoing care, with intensity adjusted to progress and risk.
Can couples see each other during outpatient care?
Couples living in separate District houses can see each other at OP and aftercare programs, subject to the clinical program's rules.
