Short-term drug rehab in Orange County
Short-term drug rehab usually refers to a residential stay of about 28 or 30 days. One month can create time for stabilization, assessment, therapy, and discharge planning, but it is often the first phase rather than a complete treatment course. Before admission, ask what comes after the residential stay and who will arrange it.
- Hospital inpatient 24-hour medical care
- Residential / detox Live-in treatment
- PHP / high-intensity OP 20+ hrs / week
- IOP 9–19 hrs / week
- Outpatient Under 9 hrs / week
- Long-term monitoring Recovery checkups
Sober living is housing, not a level of clinical care — but ASAM can recommend a recovery residence alongside outpatient treatment.
What a 30-day program can realistically do
A focused short-term program may:
- Complete medical, substance use, and mental health assessments
- Manage or coordinate withdrawal when properly licensed
- Establish a daily treatment routine
- Begin individual, group, and family work
- Start or continue medication with an appropriate prescriber
- Identify triggers, coping strategies, and overdose risks
- Build a written continuing-care plan
It cannot guarantee lasting recovery in a preset number of days. Sleep, psychiatric symptoms, family issues, medication response, and practical stability may still be changing near discharge.
Why "30 days" is not a clinical level
ASAM placement is based on assessed need, not a calendar package. Residential treatment, PHP, IOP, and standard outpatient care provide different intensity and supervision. A person may need detox before residential treatment, a longer residential stay, or outpatient care from the start.
Ask why the recommended setting is appropriate and how often that recommendation will be reviewed. A program should be willing to step care up when risk increases and step it down when the person can safely manage more independence.
Short-term versus long-term rehab
| Question | Short-term residential | Extended care |
|---|---|---|
| Typical marketing term | 28- or 30-day rehab | 60-, 90-day, or longer rehab |
| Main limitation | Little time to test a discharge plan | More disruption and potentially higher cost |
| Key quality test | A specific step-down plan before discharge | Regular reassessment rather than automatic length |
Neither duration guarantees quality. Compare licensed services, staffing, individualized planning, and continuity—not only the number printed in an advertisement.

DHCS lists 163 licensed residential substance use facilities in Orange County, with 2044 residential beds in the dataset. Those numbers do not reveal which facilities market 28- or 30-day stays, have a bed today, include detox, or accept a particular insurance plan.
Verify the exact facility and service through DHCS. Ask whether detox is part of the license, what clinical services occur each week, and whether the same organization provides any advertised housing. See how to check a California rehab license.

Questions to ask before choosing a 30-day rehab
- Is 30 days a clinical recommendation, an insurance estimate, or a fixed package?
- Is withdrawal management licensed and available on site?
- How many individual and group clinical hours occur each week?
- Who handles mental health conditions and medication?
- When does discharge planning begin?
- Which PHP, IOP, outpatient, and housing options are considered?
- Will appointments be booked before discharge?
- What happens if the person needs more or less time?
- What is owed if insurance stops authorizing care?
Avoid guaranteed outcomes, pressure to pay before assessment, vague claims about "clinical" housing, and gifts or free rent tied to one program. See patient brokering and rehab scams.
Plan the step down before admission
Discharge can arrive quickly in a short-term program. A complete plan should identify:
- Where the person will live
- The next clinical level and first appointment
- Prescriber and medication-refill dates
- Transportation to treatment
- Work, school, family, and legal obligations
- Overdose prevention, including naloxone when opioid exposure is possible
- What triggers reassessment or a return to a higher level
Ask whether the next provider has accepted the referral and confirmed availability. A list of phone numbers is not the same as a scheduled handoff.
Sober living after short-term rehab
After a residential stay, sober living can provide drug- and alcohol-free housing while someone attends PHP, IOP, or standard outpatient care. It adds house structure and peer accountability, but it does not supply therapists, medical monitoring, or 24-hour clinical supervision.
The District is sober living, not short-term rehab. We have separate men's and women's homes in four Orange County areas. With written permission, staff can coordinate with a resident's outside treatment program and offer rides to care. Residents choose their provider, and we do not pay or accept anything of value for referrals.

Common questions
What is short-term rehab?
Short-term rehab usually means a time-limited residential treatment episode, often described as 28 or 30 days. The actual stay may be shorter or longer based on assessment, progress, insurance authorization, and the program.
Is 30 days enough for addiction treatment?
Thirty days can provide stabilization, assessment, therapy, and a start on recovery skills, but it is rarely the whole recovery plan. NIDA notes that treatment duration matters and many people benefit from continuing care beyond one month.
What happens after a 30-day rehab?
Common next steps include PHP, IOP, standard outpatient care, medication follow-up, peer support, and sober living. The next appointments and housing should be confirmed before discharge.
Does every short-term rehab include detox?
No. Detoxification and residential rehabilitation are different services. Ask whether withdrawal management is licensed and provided on site, coordinated elsewhere, or not offered.
Will insurance pay for 30 days?
Not necessarily. Plans generally authorize care based on medical necessity and may review it in stages. Verify network status, authorization, deductibles, copays, and what happens if fewer days are approved.
Can I go from short-term rehab to District sober living?
Potentially, when a suitable bed is open and the person is stable enough for sober living. The District is housing, not treatment; residents can attend outside PHP, IOP, or outpatient care.
